SNYDE Exclusive: Iconic Filmmaker John Waters Hospitalized Following Car Collision in Maryland

Filmmaker John Waters Released from Hospital After Maryland Car Crash

Cult icon John Waters left a Maryland hospital on Tuesday, recovering from injuries sustained in a car accident the previous day. In a characteristically wry statement, the 78-year-old filmmaker quipped, “Since it hurts when I laugh I will have no witty answer about being in a car accident that no one has said was my fault. Hope you understand. I’m released from the hospital and all is OK,” offering little detail about the incident.

Reportedly, Waters' car was struck on the side by a van running a red light in Timonium, a suburb north of Baltimore, around 2:40 p.m. on Monday. Although examined for chest pain, Waters' injuries were not severe. The other driver, a 25-year-old man, emerged unscathed. Both vehicles were towed from the scene, showing signs of significant damage.

Before Waters clarified his condition, social media buzzed with rumors of a critical head injury, sparked by his recent appearance at the Maryland Film Festival. Known for films like “Pink Flamingos” and “Hairspray,” set against the backdrop of Baltimore, Waters has long been a fixture of the city's creative scene. Affectionately dubbed “The Pope of Trash,” he shares a deep-rooted connection with Baltimore, having grown up there and later attending the Maryland Institute College of Art.
